I think breath sounds are the kind of thing we will just have to get experience with. Learn how to identify the different types of lung sounds caused by asthma, such as wheezing, stridor, rales, and coughing. ![]() But, this may not be correlated as sometimes the pneumothorax is very small. In a pneumothorax, these breath sounds may be diminished or sometimes absent, as the air affects the transmission of sounds. dyspnea, tachypnea, use of accessory muscles, cough with or without productivity, adventitious breath sounds, prolongation of expiratory time, increased mucous production, abnormal arterial blood gases. Vesicular- these are heard through most of the lung fields and are softer. Honestly, I don't think I would have known if the sounds were reduced bilaterally since I could hear something on the reduced side, just not as loud. pain, increased lung compliance, decreased lung expansion, obstruction, decreased elasticity/recoil. When I placed my stethoscope on the left side, however, the breath sounds were MUCH louder. Attenuated bronchovesicular lung sounds are due to thoracic masses, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, obesity, pneumonia, shallow breathing, or early consolidation of the pulmonary parenchyma. When I listened on that side, I could hear breath sounds. Abnormal respiratory sounds include attenuated sounds as well as increased, abnormal sounds. I had a 2 year old boy with pneumonia and right pleural effusion - basically, a big wad of gunk in his right lower lobe. Cheyne-Stokes lung noises, also called the death rattle, include wheezes, rattles, and high-pitched whistles. At one of my nursing school clinicals, I had an experience with diminished lung sounds and it was very obvious, but only when I listened on both sides. Pleural friction noises, also known as pebbles friction, are a particular kind of lung sound that emanates from the front side of the lungs and is brought on by the friction of the pleural layers. ![]() High-pitched, musical breathing sound caused by a blockage in the throat or voice box (larynx). This just means they are muffled or are at a lower volume than expected. However, both adventitious lung sounds and clear breath sounds can be diminished. This is associated with secretions or a tumor. Diminished lung sounds are considered abnormal, but they are not classified as adventitious lung sounds. The decreased intensity of breath sounds can be either due to poor sound production or poor sound transmission by emphysematous lung parenchyma. Continuous low-pitched, rattling lung sounds that often resemble snoring. ![]() I am a new RN - I start my first job in 2 weeks. Clicking, rattling, or crackling sounds are heard during inspiration and expiration. Can someone explain to me what diminished lungs are and what is the significance of this? Everyone I ask either doesn't know or they just say it means you don't hear the usual clear swooshing in and out (probably not a good way to put it).
